Eco2librium, one of the newest members of the Circular Bionutrient Economy Network (CBEN), has announced the launch of an ambitious Biochar Project across Kakamega and its wider areas of operation. This new initiative builds on the company’s track record of impactful projects, including energy-efficient cookstoves, solar electrification, and forest restoration.
Since 2017, Eco2librium has earned global recognition for its business solutions that address social and environmental challenges. The company has previously been named Best for the World and invited to share its model at the World Forum for a Responsible Economy. Its focus remains clear: fighting climate change, improving livelihoods, creating jobs for underserved communities, and conserving tropical forests.

The launch of the Biochar Project marks another major milestone in Eco2librium’s mission to champion sustainability through innovation. By producing biochar—a type of charcoal made from organic waste—the project aims to help sequester carbon while enhancing soil health and agricultural productivity. Biochar is known to capture carbon from the atmosphere, improve soil fertility and water retention, and boost crop yields.

By transforming agricultural waste into biochar, Eco2librium joins over 30 organizations in CBEN in taking tangible steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions and advance climate change mitigation. The project specifically targets the use of maize and sugarcane stovers—common residues from smallholder farms in the region—as key feedstocks for biochar production. In addition, Eco2librium will largely rely on bamboo wastes as a primary raw material for its biochar operations, leveraging bamboo’s fast growth and high carbon sequestration potential. Local farmers will play a vital role in this process, learning how to collect, produce, and apply biochar as a cost-effective, sustainable solution to improve soil quality, boost crop yields, and build resilience against climate stresses.
Eco2librium emphasizes collaboration at every stage of the project, engaging local stakeholders to drive climate-smart agriculture and long-term environmental sustainability. To ensure transparency and accountability, the project has established a grievance mechanism and safeguarding principles, providing farmers and community members with accessible channels for feedback through email, social media, and regular field visits.

As public participation and stakeholder consultations continue, Eco2librium invites communities, partners, researchers, and investors to join in shaping this climate-smart solution. By working together, they hope to reduce emissions, restore soil health, and build a more resilient and sustainable future for generations to come.
