CBEN December Meeting: Welcoming New Members, Formalization, & Advancing Key Initiatives

The December monthly catch-up meeting for the Circular Bionutrient Economy Network (CBEN) began with an introduction of new members and followed with productive and conclusive discussions to formalise the network.

New members were Caroline, a soil scientist at IFDC specializing in optimizing agricultural resources; Tilahun, Director at Oromia Agricultural Research Institute, Ethiopia; and Alex, representing the WtE hubs in Kenya’s Lake region. Tilahun, a participant in the October Artisinal Study Tour shared his insights in biochar explorations in Ethiopia following the tour.

Following introductions, Erick Abala, CBEN Head of Comms, gave a presentation outlining potential pathways for network formalisation, a Cooperative Society (association) being one of the four options. The audience inquired about common grant requirements and any limitations for cooperative society registration on a global scale.

A cooperative society provides a legal and financial identity for the network and guidance in drafting a constitution and governing structure. Erick further cited that this cooperative model aligns well with CBEN values of community ownership, cost-effectiveness, and operational flexibility. After thorough discussion and shared experiences from Titus, David, and Sam with Cooperative Societies in Kenya, the 19-person group concluded that registering CBEN as a cooperative society in Kenya was the best option for the network’s legal identity. As CBEN continues to grow, the decision to formalize as a cooperative society promises to strengthen the network’s foundation and advance its mission of promoting sustainable bio-nutrient management practices. In early 2025, Erick and Bella will gather and expand the operational committee in readiness of the formalization process.
